The word “potion” has long been associated with mystical things like witches’ brews and alchemy from the days of Merlin and King Arthur. But really, potions are simply liquid mixtures that are primarily medicinal in nature. With the popularity of things like Harry Potter and Minecraft these days, potions are less relegated to the mystical realm, and more accepted as novel, interesting, and even fun.
One of my favorite parts of naturopathic medical school was the time that we spent in the herb lab. We had the chance to not only learn about a wide variety of herbs and their medicinal properties, but also explore mixing them together as teas, tinctures, and other forms of medicine. We were able to taste them, and test them, so we could have a more complete understanding of their effects.
The great thing is that these days it is easier than ever for people to “brew a potion” of their own choosing – after all, when we brew a cup of tea, that is exactly what we are doing!
Tea is one of my favorite potions! I love being able to buy bulk herbs at the local shop and mix them together to create a lovely tea to drink at the end of the day. Below is one of my favorite mixtures that I like to keep on hand for a rainy or cold winter day. It is also especially helpful in supporting healthy immune function during “cold and flu season.”
Most of these herbs are easy to find in bulk at a local herb shop or even online. For more information on each herb and other ways to enjoy them, reach out! We love talking herbs with our clients!
Enjoy!
