My 5 Favorite Herbs for Immune Support

Sep 27, 2022

When it comes to supporting and boosting your immune system, there are many different ways you can go about it.  One of my favorite ways to help support the immune system naturally is by making an herbal blend, either through tea or tincture.  When doing this, there are a select number of herbs that always come to the forefront of my mind that I like to include.  Sometimes one is better suited than another, because they all have their benefits for different parts of the body.  Here are my 5 favorite herbs that I turn to when looking to support the immune system:

  1. Elderberry – Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has been used by herbalists for centuries in many different ways.  It is traditionally used for immune support and can be taken preventatively or in a different preparation at the start of feeling ill.  Its high concentration of antioxidants and anthocyanins make it a fantastic general immune supportive herb.
  2. Echinacea – Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia or Echinacea purpurea) is a well known herb for supporting a healthy immune response.  A constituent in the herb, alkylamides, are responsible for the signature tingling sensation, which also offers the most immune support, especially in times of early onset illness.
  3. Astragalus – Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous) supports healthy immune function while also providing critical stress support.  The polysaccharides within astragalus support the integrity of the mucous membrane within the gut, which then helps to support the microbiome, and ultimately the overall gut health.  It also supports a modulated response to physical, emotional, and mental stressors on the body, leading to an overall balanced response to immune triggers.
  4. Andrographis – Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is a bitter herb that is traditionally used to support healthy levels of immune cells in the blood.  It can also be used to support gut health, and the health of the gut microbiota.  This in turn offers exceptional immune support, as up to 70% of our immune system is located within the gut.
  5. Ginger – Ginger (Zingiber officinalis) is a wonderfully warming and tonifying herb that offers circulation support as well.  The gingerols and shogaols as constituents promote healthy circulation, which in turn offers healthy immune support, and overall supportive benefits to the whole body.  It also is a wonderful herb for tying together a formula with a blend of herbs to make it tasty and synergized.
